Minimalism: the true cost of stuff

Often we take into consideration slicing down on what we purchase as a result of we’d wish to be frugal, and get monetary savings. And I’m all for that.

But there’s extra to purchasing much less. Way extra.

The cost of buying an merchandise simply scratches the floor. When we purchase one thing, we’re taking it into our houses, our lives, and we’re taking over the life of one other object on this world.

The life of an object? But certainly you’ve gone mad, Leo.

It’s totally potential I’ve — I’m speaking to myself on this publish, in any case. But hear me out, O hypothetical reader in my thoughts.

An object isn’t born in the retailer. It is born in the woods (whether it is wooden), in the mines (if it’s metallic), in the depths of the world (in the case of petroleum-based merchandise similar to plastics, artificial textiles and such), or maybe all three locations and extra if it’s a mixture of supplies. It’s born when these pure assets are mined or harvested (at nice cost and nice cost to the surroundings), after which hauled to a manufacturing unit someplace, a manufacturing unit that pollutes, inevitably. It’s formed and shifted into its ultimate type (typically in numerous factories), then shipped to varied distribution methods and eventually to the retailer.

I say lastly, however it’s removed from remaining. The life of this object has simply begun to enter our lives, regardless that we’ve already paid for the destruction of our Earth simply to personal it.

Now we should transport it residence, additional polluting and consuming and paying — paying for the cost of gasoline and upkeep of our transportation, until it’s human-powered, in addition to the cost of time, valuable seconds of our lives that we’ll by no means get again).

All of that spent, it now occupies beneficial actual property in our houses (or workplaces), actual property that would go to dwelling area, or actual property that we might surrender if we had much less stuff and a smaller residence. This is actual property that’s actually costly, btw: we pay exorbitant costs to personal or lease a house , and each sq. foot of that house prices us extra valuable time that we spend working to earn the cash to pay for that actual property. And that’s only for lease or mortgage. Add in the cost of energy or fuel to warmth or cool that house, the cost of sustaining the house, and the time we spend sustaining and cleansing and decluttering and organizing that house and the stuff in it.

And but, we’ve nonetheless solely scratched the floor. The merchandise, if it’s digital, requires energy. All the time. The merchandise must be maintained. Switched on and off, cleaned, oiled, and warning taken to not break it. These are extra valuable seconds, valuable dollars. If it’s wooden or metallic or glass, it’d must be polished. It may break a bit and wish repairing. We should retailer its guarantee someplace, and never overlook about that (extra psychological cycles spent). We may need particular instruments for it, cleansing merchandise, equipment. All of these require area and care and cash.

And but, we’re not even midway there. I’ll spare you the relaxation of the narrative and simply make an inventory.

And that is solely a partial listing. Some prices of proudly owning stuff:

It clutters our area, inflicting distractions and stress.
We should always transfer it to get to different stuff, to wash, to arrange, to color partitions or beautify or rework.
We should take it with us if we transfer, and sometimes if we journey. That’s a ton of hassle and prices.
Often we pay for additional storage, outdoors in our yards or in storage amenities.
If it breaks, we’ll typically take it to be repaired.
If we now have youngsters or pets, we’ve to fret about it getting damaged, or scold them for not being cautious with it.
If we get used to it, and it breaks, we’ll substitute it as a result of we expect we’d like it.
If it will get previous and crotchety, we have now the headache of placing up with a less-than-functioning device.
If we have now an excessive amount of stuff, it weighs us down, emotionally.
We get hooked up to our stuff, creating an emotional battle once we contemplate giving it up (whether or not we truly give it up or not).
